One of the hardest working bands in metal, Hemlock has practically toured non stop with the likes of Slayer, Hatebreed, and Arch Enemy since its inception in the mid nineties. Hemlock started off doing regional tours in the Southwestern US and then began touring nationally in 2003. Hailing from Las Vegas Nevada, a place better known for lounge acts, Hemlock has always been a hands-on, DIY kind of band. Lead vocalist Chad Smith, with his menacing mass of dreadlocks, is known for often handling his own merch booth before the show and staying well afterward to talk to fans. This attitude is what helped Hemlock get noticed by major bands and invited onto their tours.
Hemlocks latest effort 'No Time for Sorrow' is its fifth full length album and a brutal onslaught of metal. Ironically, what makes Hemlocks music unique is its simplicity. Hemlock plays straight forward metal with no gimmicks. Its not death metal, black metal, or metalcore. It's just metal. Comparing them to any one band is difficult because Hemlock blends some of the best elements of metal, but just to give you an idea, solo Ozzy, Pantera, and Prong are names that come to mind while listening to 'No Time for Sorrow'as well as Hatebreed. Songs like 'Backstabber' have a head-bang worthy, chunky rhythm section, with crunchy guitar work and angry shouted vocals. Same thing with the title track, which starts out with some heavy drumming and then assaults the ears with a shredding guitar rhythm. There is not a lot of fancy, squeal laden guitar work on 'No Time for Sorrow' and this is not a criticism. It's actually refreshing to hear a band that is not trying to show off how fast and complicated it can play. What matters on 'No Time for Sorrow' is the songs. The rhythms are catchy, heavy, and you can't help but nod your head to the beat. Like 'What You Don't Know' which is full of memorable, beefy guitar riffs and robust bass lines.
Not surprisingly, Hemlock is currently on tour, this time with industrial metal legends Ministry, a show I'm definitely not going to miss. So run out and buy 'No Time for Sorrow' before the gig so you can be familiar with the new material!
